![]() ![]() I'm not saying frustrating puzzles aren't a valid complaint, I'd say there are a few in the game (including the wheelbarrow one).īut if the game overall is frustrating you might want to step back and think about the game as an interactive story with some puzzles thrown in and cut it a little slack for being a game released almost 20 years ago. Levels are designed to move you along a set path with subtle (or not so subtle) visual or auditory cues instead of spending the time exploring the space and just seeing what does what. Outside of the adventure game logic some older adventure games have that usually end up trying to combine everything with everything else there's the exploration component that is lost in many newer games. It's could just be about perception of what you expect the game to be and judging/playing it instead for what it is. Hence, the fun of using your noodle is lost a bit on what could have been better games. Often this is becuase of 1) convoluted puzzle design or 2) bad game design in which a random plot element needs to occur in order to continue (the drunken trade in year 2 comes to mind). In old adventure games, puzzles can be fun & wacky for a while until you hit a wall devolving into spamming characters with objects. ![]() Generally you can see a rhyme & reason behind a problem/solution and solving it is rewarding. Fiddling around & tinkering to solve a puzzle in Puzzle games, like Portal, was enjoyable. While the characters and writing in GF are great (& especially with developer commentary), by themselves, they don't make a great game.Īs puzzle games, 90s adventure leaves much to be desired. Moreover, there are other avenues for better story/writing (film, television, etc.). Writing in general has gotten better across gaming. The problem with classic adventure games is their features are story/writing & puzzles, doing the former pretty well and the latter not so well.
